The Power Of Music & Source of Hope

Power of Music for Your Soul

Life can be tough, and sometimes we find comfort in unexpected places. For Lisa Barry, it was music that helped her through hard times. Her story shows us how Christian music can be a source of hope and healing. As we read her journey, we see how music isn’t just sounds and words, but a helping hand that guides us to find peace and grow spiritually.

The Power of Music in Lisa Barry’s Life

When my boyfriend broke up with me, I was so sad I’d crank up the radio in the car, hoping to get some sort of a sign that it wasn’t really over for good. Whenever I’d punch a button on the radio console, I’d tell myself whatever song came on next was providential; some truth I needed, or secret glimpse into the future. I listened like it was a musical magic 8 ball. That approach usually ended in tears.

At the same time, I started my spiritual journey. My old friends didn’t want to hang out with me much because I was kind of a killjoy and the parties with drinking just weren’t doing it for me anymore. So I started hanging out with church kids who were nothing like me. But they accepted me. They were the ones who told me about Christian radio. I didn’t even know something like that existed!

I listened. My soul seemed to drink it up. I guess it was thirsty from all the crying.  ♪”Praise the Lord…he can work through those who praise him, praise the Lord, for our God inhabits praise…”  Wow. I felt goose-bumps. It had been a long, long time since I felt those. It was nice.  ♪”Carry me, Carry me, won’t you carry me now, cause I’m too weak and fragile to walk on my own…”  Yes, that’s exactly what I’m feeling!

Then I will praise you with music on the harp, because you are faithful to your promises, O my God. I will sing praises to you with a lyre, O Holy One of Israel. I will shout for joy and sing your praises, for you have ransomed me.

~Psalm 71.22-23 NLT

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

~Matthew 11.28-29 NIV

Tears flowed again. But this time it was different because these weren’t hopeless tears of a dying love, but hopeful tears of something new, something higher, something richer. Tears of a heaviness getting lighter.

Christian music is God’s voice with an unmatched ability to penetrate brick walls and hearts of stone. It can travel through an ear canal, bypass every bodily organ until it finds its home in a heart that’s weary.  Would I have made it without Christian music? Maybe. Probably. But the most beautiful moments I’ve had on this earth were somehow attached to those songs. Do you realize music is the only thing on this earth whose whole purpose is to give you joy and self-expression? God sings to you, and you reply back. As you can tell, I’m a fan. God has a lot he wants to say to you, in the most beautiful sentences you’ve ever heard. Don’t miss it.

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.

~Zephaniah 3.17 NLT
