Make Room for God’s Presence

It’s easy to think “success” means a better job, a bigger house, or a new car. It’s also easy to justify taking time to work towards those milestones, but if we stop at that limited understanding of success, we’ll miss the biggest blessing we could ever receive: walking in God’s presence every day of our lives.

Moses understood this. “If your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15) God’s presence matters more than the destination or the blessing. We can spend so much time asking God to change our circumstances that we forget to ask Him to be with us no matter what our circumstances are. When we make space for God’s presence in our everyday lives, everything changes. The atmosphere in our homes, our relationships, and our perspective in difficult situations.

What Are You Making Room For?

One of the most challenging questions we can ask ourselves is: am I spending my time on what really matters?

Of course, we all have limited time, and the way we spend our time is a sure-fire way to see what our priorities are. If you struggle with this, please know, most of us do. Remind yourself that the goal isn’t to squeeze one more thing into an already busy schedule. It’s to recognize that time with God is not something we have to earn or accomplish. It’s an opportunity to be with the One who loves us and wants to walk with us through every part of our lives.

Practical Ways to Prioritize Time With God

So, what does making room for God actually look like in everyday life?

Start your day with God. As early in your day as possible, spend a few minutes praying or reading Scripture. It doesn’t have to be an hour-long quiet time. Start where you are, and let those few minutes become a regular part of your morning.

Use the small moments. You don’t need a perfectly scheduled day (does that even exist??) or a completely quiet house to spend time with God. Pray while you’re driving, listen to Scripture or a Christian podcast while you’re getting ready, or take a few minutes to talk with God while you’re on a walk. Invite Him into the ordinary parts of your day.

Put your phone down.
We all know how quickly a few minutes of scrolling can turn into more time than we care to admit. Try creating a little space in your day without your phone. Use that time to pray, read your Bible, sit quietly with God, or simply thank Him for what He has done.

Make Christian community a priority. We aren’t meant to follow Jesus alone. Find people who will pray with you, encourage you, and help you keep Jesus at the center. Sometimes making room for God also means making room for the people He has placed around you.

Create a rhythm that works for your life. Maybe you read Scripture with your morning coffee. Maybe you pray before bed. Maybe Sunday worship becomes a non-negotiable part of your week. Find simple, sustainable ways to make time with God a natural part of your routine rather than something you only do when life gets difficult.

You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you can choose who you want walking with you through it. So take a moment today and ask yourself: What am I making room for? And what might change if I made more room for God?
