How Can We Connect with “The Jesus Generation”
Have you heard of “The Jesus Generation?” It started with a song by Forrest Frank and has turned into a movement of today’s youth becoming more interested in Jesus and His teachings.
Add to that some very encouraging studies about Gen Z and Jesus from Barna Group, including this statistic:
From the way that stat is worded, you may assume it’s referring to teens who already consider themselves Christian, but it isn’t! This is based on all teens surveyed. See the chart below to see how it breaks down.
U.S. Teens’ Motivation To Continue Learning About Jesus

One thing becomes very clear…there’s A LOT of opportunity for evangelism and discipleship with Gen Z! Many are searching for something real in a world that often feels overwhelming and uncertain.
The good news is that we don’t have to have all the answers to help point someone toward Christ. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply be present, listen, and share God’s love in everyday ways.
Start with Relationship, Not Religion
One of the biggest misconceptions about sharing faith is thinking we need to begin with a sermon. If we study how Jesus did ministry, he often started with relationship.
When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4), He didn’t begin by correcting her. He began a conversation. He listened. He met her where she was. Through that relationship, she came to understand who He was.
Many younger generations are looking for authentic connections. They can often spot when someone is trying to “fix” them instead of genuinely caring about them. Building trust through friendship, kindness, and consistency creates opportunities for meaningful conversations about faith.
Sometimes connecting with someone starts with a simple question: “How are you really doing?”
Be Willing to Listen More Than You Speak
Many young adults and teens have questions about faith, church, suffering, and culture. They may have experienced hurt, disappointment, or confusion related to Christianity.
James 1:19 reminds us, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
Listening doesn’t mean we compromise biblical truth. It means we create space for honest conversations. When people feel heard, they’re often more open to hearing about Jesus.
You don’t have to win an argument. Your goal is to reflect Christ’s love. Sometimes a listening ear can open a door that a debate never could.
Show Jesus Through Your Everyday Life
Young people are often drawn to authenticity more than perfection. Jesus told His followers, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
The way we respond to stress, treat others, handle conflict, and show compassion can speak volumes. People may not be interested in reading the Bible right away, but they will notice how faith impacts our daily lives.
When we admit our struggles, share how God has been faithful, and live with genuine hope, we demonstrate that following Jesus is not about having a perfect life, but about knowing the One who walks with us through every season.
Meet Them Where They Are
Jesus consistently met people where they were; physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Today’s younger generations often connect through social media, podcasts, music, online communities, coffee shops, sports teams, and local events. While church remains vitally important, many times the first step toward faith happens outside church walls.
A conversation over coffee, a shared playlist of worship music, an encouraging text message, or inviting someone to a Christian event can become meaningful opportunities for spiritual growth.
You don’t have to force a conversation about Jesus. Pray for opportunities and trust God to open doors at the right time.
Keep Pointing Them to Jesus
At the end of the day, our goal isn’t simply to get someone to attend a church service—it’s to help them encounter Jesus.
Church community is valuable and important, but transformation happens through a relationship with Christ. As we pray, love, listen, and walk alongside others, God works in ways we may never fully see.
If there’s a young person in your life who seems curious about faith, don’t underestimate the impact you can have. A simple conversation, an invitation, or a caring friendship may be the very thing God uses to draw them closer to Him.
Take a moment today to pray for the younger generations. Ask God to give you wisdom, compassion, and opportunities to share His love. You don’t have to have all the answers. You simply have to be willing to point people toward the One who does.
